User Scenarios

Novice

Jake is a 16 year old student who is currently studying Geography in year 8 at Randwick Boys high school, where he is interested to learn about the ocean’s wildlife. The teacher is focusing on one of the largest warm-blooded mammals in the ocean which is whales. The teacher wants to discuss the impact of whaling in terms of the different species, so he/she has provided are reliable sourced interactive website named ‘Stop Whaling Around!’ where the students can obtain information that can help them in the process of discussing the impact of whaling as a small assessment which the teacher has briefed.

The teacher has informed them to use website during class-time as well as working on it at home in their own time when working on their assessment. I expect the students to enjoy the experience of interacting with my website, with the ocean colour palette to refer it to the ocean, with simple and large typefaces for headings and titles so it is easier to read, with a decent amount of information so they can get an idea for they might cover on their projects. The more interactive side to it will allow them to play a slideshow/video on information about whales and different photos that they can reference in their projects. The video can allow them to pause, fast forward/rewind, and change quality. I will also introduce some moveable features as well as clickable such as moving waves/water, fish going in and out of the page, hover buttons to present information and a interactive map where they are able to click to find located areas where whales are being targeted.

Expert

Sarah is a 27 year old, who is a fitness instructor at fitness first. Sarah lives and breathes in the ocean where she lives in an apartment in South Coogee, NSW, where it is an easy 5 minute walk down to Coogee beach, where she normally cools off after her training sessions.

In her free time Sarah heads downs to the beach where she brings her laptop and connects to the Mcdonald’s wifi and does her research on whaling. She has a passion for caring for the environment mainly the wildlife in the ocean, especially on the treatment of whales. She wants to get involved by give a helping hand in the process of getting rid of the illegal act of whaling, because sooner or later they may become instinct in the future. Through the process of doing her research she has come across my website, which allows her to get involved with the process of this issue. She also comes across interesting information on what the website is all about. There is a contact page which will allow Sarah to get involved. As said in the scenario above for Jake, Sarah will also be able to interact by watching the slideshow/video to discuss what the website is about and how the user (Sarah) can make a difference if she gets involved.

Week 6: Lecture Notes

User Scenarios:

Are the stories the personas act out

  • basically are thought exercises, usually represented visually
  • will help your future users look for when trying to complete tasks on your site
  • allows you to test your site structure before it’s fully developed & isolate problems before they become problems
  • Scenarios should outline the:
    • who
    • what
    • when – USAGE
    • where
    • why
    • how

an example of a user scenario mapping using post it notes, tracking behaviours or stories & steps through the website for ordering flowers

Figure 1: Screen grab from week 6 lecture pod – Scenarios – Sarah Waterson (2019)

Reflection:

The most important aspect of this lecture pod is when outlining scenarios you should take into notion of who, what, when, where, why, and how of the usage. These 6 key areas are important before developing a scenario for a certain person. These steps makes it easier for the person creating the scenario because it helps them make a decision on the person’s intention is, which can will help later on in the process of building the interactive app/ website or product etc.

Week 5: Lecture Notes

User Personas

Figure 1: Screen grab from week 5 lecture pod – Personas – Sarah Waterson (2019)

User experience design model – identifying user successfully has a flowing effect to an entire project

Figure 2: Screen grab from week 5 lecture pod – Personas – Sarah Waterson (2019)

User Personas:

  • User personas have been integrated with a user experience documentation since the mid 1990’s
  • Are fictional user’s representative of our real user’s which we can reference throughout our creative process to inform and validate our design & user experience
  • User personas are a representation of the goals & behaviour of a hypothesised group of user’s
  • Personas are synthesised from data collected from interviews with user’s. They are captured in 1-2 page description that include:
    • behaviour patterns
    • goals
    • skills
    • attitudes
    • environment
    • context

Defining personas:

what are the task’s your user’s are trying to perform?

when developing personas the questions we need to answer is:

  • Are there different tasks for different personas?
    • defining personas can uncover new use cases
  • Are the tasks you are designing for matching up with the user base your personas represent?
Figure 3: Screen grab from week 5 lecture pod – Personas – Sarah Waterson (2019)

Artefact Personas:

  • To develop artefact personas – Product Personality
Figure 4: Screen grab from week 5 lecture pod – Personas – Sarah Waterson (2019)

Reflection:

The most important part of the lecture pod is the user experience design model on identifying how the user successfully has a flowing effect to an entire project. It’s a simple stage process for a a user to follow the certain steps of the website to gain an understanding of what information they are in search for which is the main objective to it. It also has relation to the diagram involving the 2 users involved through the process where they end at the same stage which is the article (target).

Another aspect i found that was important as well to cover is the product personality questions. It’s essentially questioning the person producing the product where they have to question the purpose of the product and if i was in a certain users shoe what would question in terms of why i should purchase the product.

Overall these 2 aspects are important when thinking/being in side of the users shoes in terms of building user scenarios to target different contexts of the user’s persona to achieve in successfully pulling off their proposal or product.

Assessment 2: Idea Process

Who:

The people that i would recommend or preferably want to access my website is people who care for the ocean wildlife. Most likely from teens from ages 16 – 19 attending high school, as well as adults from the ages of 25-40 years of age who care for our oceans wildlife.

What:

The project will be based on the idea of whaling and specific areas around different oceans around the world and the countries who are committing this illegal act. It will be an information site on several issues involving which amount of species that are being targeted and why they are being targeted.

Where:

The ideal locations/areas where i’d like user’s to access this website is high schools where it can be informed by the teacher to notify students if they have access to a device whether it’s a tablet, mobile phone or computer where they are able to visit the website.

Why:

The website is to discuss the issue of whaling and the illegal act of it. In the nearby future certain species of whales will be extinct without the public knowing, so the issue needs to be addressed in schools relating to subjects like geography to inform teachers to provide this informational website to address the matter of whaling and it’s negative impacts and how the younger generation can make a change to reverse this issue.

10 ideas for Outcome:

  1. interactive buttons to hover on which presents different information
  2. Infographic design of the amount of whaling occurring in certain areas (graph)
  3. Slideshow/video of the infographics of where the whaling is happening
  4. Infographic of a boat with a harpoon, allowing the user to interact with by clicking a button where the animation of the harpoon striking the different whale species
  5. Images of different whales being targeted with a statistic or approximated number when clicking on each of the several whales.
  6. Interesting facts besides the whales when hovering over the interactive design.
  7. Providing a section of a page where you can get involved helping this issue.
  8. Using a intriguing colour palette of the ocean to make it feel realistic
  9. Add moving features around the website to make it look like a real ocean (e.g. crashing/moving waves, fish swimming around, swaying seaweed, etc.)
  10. A interactive map having clickable features to show where the whaling is occurring the most.

Classmates favourite 3 ideas:

  1. A interactive map having clickable features to show where the whaling is occurring the most
    • Why: One of my peers chose this idea because it allows the user to have a some sort of interactivity when accessing the website especially when it’s targeted at high school students.
  2. Add moving features around the website to make it look like a real ocean (e.g. crashing/moving waves, fish swimming around, swaying seaweed, etc.)
    • Why: This idea was chosen by the fact that it brings some sort of virtual realistic experience with moveable features which can be intriguing to some high school students if they have interest in our oceans.
  3. Infographic design of the amount of whaling occurring in certain areas (graph)
    • Why: One of my peers felt like this was important to have in the outcome of my idea because it gives an indication of the amount of whaling happening in different locations which can change the viewers perspective on the idea of whaling and feeling a sense of empathy for these whales.

Toast: Wireframes and Interface screens

Following the toast theme example, i had planned to go for a simple feel if ever building this website. It would be targeted at consumers that may have never used toaster or never known how to make toast. Mainly aimed to the younger generation.

Wireframe

This wireframe is a general idea of what is going to be expected on the toast website involving a title, image of a toaster, with navigation menus.

Interface Screens

These screens that i mocked up in illustrator involve the design of what the homepage will be seen as from when you first access the website. As it is targeted at a younger generation. I went for a friendly/ fun look with bright colours and the main focus is the smiling toast, a catchy title and the comic toaster look which will be inviting for children.

The 4 dials involve an interactive navigation menu/bar where it is easy for access especially when it is targeted at the younger generation and for the people who don’t know how to make toast or how to use a toaster. Also the friendly icon in the bottom right corner for the secondary navigation will direct them back to the homepage.
